Getting started with the practice
We welcome private and medical card patients to the surgery. During times of the year when waiting times for an appointment exceeds two weeks (excluding on the day appointments) we may temporarily close the practice to new patients. If you are visiting us for the first time our receptionist will ask you to complete a registration form giving us basic demographic, contact and medical information.
...make an appointment
We operate by appointment only. In saying that, we keep a certain number of appointments free every day for life's little surprises. We have begun using an online booking system called Pippo, which allows you to view available appointments and chose a time that suits you best. For more information on this, please click here. If you chose to phone us to make an appointment, please outline your issue to our receptionist so they can book you the most appropriate appointment eg. blood tests, 6 monthly diabetic review, driving licence medical etc. For emergencies outside of hours please contact EDOC.
...request a blood test
To book a blood test with us you must have a blood test form completed by a doctor. If you do not have one please contact us to make an appointment. There your doctor will write a form for bloods specific to your needs.
The cost of some, not all, blood tests are covered by the HSE. Even with a full medical card not all tests are covered. Your doctor will advise you if there is a charge for a particular blood test. There is no charge if the blood test is performed in a hospital. We supply you with the blood test form to allow you to make your best decision. Please see www.stvincents.ie
or www.stmichaels.ie
or phone St Colmcille's at 01 282 5800
and ask for a blood test appointment.
Depending on the tests required, we may not be able to facilitate private consultant blood tests. Please forward a copy of the blood test request form so we can check this prior to booking. If the tests are performed in the public hospital laboratory a separate charge applies due to extra time taken for administration of tests and results. The private hospitals all have phlebotomy departments that can facilitate private consultant blood tests.
...follow up results
Following up results once tests are done is of utmost importance. In the past there was a “no news is good news” approach, but this allows some results to be missed. We aim to contact you by text or call as soon as results are received. You must opt-in to receive texts from the surgery and complete the text message consent form. However if you have not heard from us after 2 weeks please contact the surgery to follow up. If the doctor has advised a return appointment to review results then phoning to check results are in prior to attending is prudent.
Results of tests ordered by consultants do not routinely come back to the surgery. The team will have set up a review appointment for this.
...order a Prescription
Following new legislation, the need for prescription renewals is gone. GPs may now write prescriptions for up to 12 months, allowing our doctors to give you longer prescriptions and increase the time between your appointments. This uses your prescription ending as a reminder for you to come back and see us again. For your safety and wellbeing, our doctors will write a prescription of specific length with a goal of seeing you back when it ends. If you are near the end of your prescription, please make an appointment for review with a doctor here.
Order a Prescription
In line with best practice, we do not prescribe sleeping tablet type medication for longer than 1-2 weeks.
...make a suggestion
We are constantly looking for ways to improve the surgery and if there is a problem that we should correct, please write a short account of the situation and drop it into the comments box in the surgery reception. We aim to review all comments and respond within 1 week. More serious issues are best raised in writing and addressed to Dr Marry or Dr Greaney. Remember, our focus is to get the best outcomes for all our patients. Raising issues can be difficult but is greatly appreciated as it benefits other patients and the practice in the long term.
